Skeletal Correction
A specialist who straightens teeth is officially known as a “Specialist in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.” The term “Dentofacial Orthopedics” refers to types of treatments that are used to favorably influence the way in which an individual’s face grows and develops. In addition to braces and other orthodontic (tooth-moving) appliances, orthopedic appliances are used by orthodontists to induce a favorable change in the growth of the skeletal framework of the mouth and face. Influencing the way that the jaws and other skeletal structures in the face develop helps to achieve an improved smile and occlusion (bite) in many patients. One reason that it is important for children to have an orthodontic screening by age 7 is that orthopedic treatments can only provide a benefit to individuals who are still growing. Seeing children at an early age can allow the orthodontist to plan treatment for the optimal point of an individual’s growth. |
